October is National Seafood Month! Seafood is a great idea – easy to season and prepare, fish and seafood are lean protein choices that have many health benefits. The Dietary
Guidelines for Americans and the American Heart Association recommend two servings per week for good health, including farmed and wild caught. There is also strong science that shows pregnant women and young children should be including seafood in their diets:

Who should eat seafood?
Everyone – children, teens and adults of all ages. Americans are averaging just over 2 ounces per week, far below recommendations for 8 ounces that would improve lean protein and omega 3 intake. That gap is partly due to media reports – information on best choices is often contradictory and can be based on opinion vs. fact. Other concerns, including clear information on sustainability and mercury, adds to the confusion. Good news – the science is clear. As Americans get more interested in health, particularly heart health, getting more seafood into their weekly routine will have a positive impact. Best choices that keep health and sustainability in mind include many species that we sell in our fresh and frozen cases:
Anchovy, Catfish, Clams, Cod, Crab, Crawfish, Flounder, Haddock, Hake, Scallops, Shrimp, Sole, Squid, Tilapia, Trout, freshwater Tuna, canned light Tuna (includes skipjack), Whitefish, Whiting, Herring, Lobster, Oysters, Perch, Pollock and Salmon.
We are kicking Seafood Month off with salmon and swordfish on sale! We have so many solutions to making delicious seafood easy to make, including Create, Take and Bake seafood meals at the seafood counter, frozen choices that can go from freezer to plate in 15 minutes, and new options for your oven or microwave on the way!
