We love all things local, and one of our favorite sectors of local food is local beer. There are so many different brews, flavors and styles, and so many stories to tell! That’s why we’re embarking on a new home.grown. adventure: to bring you fresh craft beer stories each month from our Northeast region; the best region in the United States if you ask us!
First up on stage: Ithaca Beer Co!
Located in New York’s Finger Lakes region and sharing a hometown with Cornell University, Ithaca Beer Co was founded in 1998 by Dan Mitchell in a small renovated retail store just outside of Ithaca.
The brewery’s original space had a small 7-barrel brew house, a modest tasting bar and sold growlers to go as well as home brew supplies. Today, Ithaca Beer Co sits 1/4 mile from its original facility, brews about 25,000 barrels of beer per year and operates a full-service farm-to-table brewpub. In addition to a state-of-the-art brewing facility, the operation has automated packaging capabilities for bottling, canning and kegging.
Ithaca Beer’s flagship brew, Flower Power IPA, continuously garners high marks with Beer Advocate and Rate Beer as well as many media accolades, being recognized as the “25th Most Important American Craft Beer Ever Brewed” by Food & Wine magazine. The Finger Lakes brewing heavyweight creates numerous styles each year, from Core Beliefs Flower Power and Apricot Wheat to seasonal and limited release Random Acts, plus numerous weekly small batch one-offs and a variety of rare, limited and barrel aged offerings from its “Excelsior!” Series.
Ithaca Beer’s Brew York Pale Ale is brewed with 100% NYS-grown hops and 66% NYS-grown malt. Sounds like a home.grown. hit to us! The self-proclaimed “Spirit of the Finger Lakes”, Ithaca Beer Co is one of the most unique breweries we partner with: They’ve always got an eye on creating something new, while sticking to their tried and true favorites that our shoppers love, like their famous Flower Power brew. We’ve been partnering with them for over a decade and we’re excited to see what they come up with next!
