Did you know that many of world’s fish stocks are being depleted? While demand for fish has significantly increased, overfishing and chemical pollution, among other factors, has pushed the ocean’s many fish and marine mammals to the verge of extinction. Price Chopper and Local Ocean have teamed up to help stop this problem while also bringing our customers the freshest high quality products.
Price Chopper is the first supermarket retailer in the nation to provide customers with the opportunity to purchase the progressive company’s sustainable, “locally grown” sea bream.
Local Ocean’s sea bream is the species that initially will be available, starting today, at six Price Chopper stores: Hudson, Shoppers World in Clifton Park, Loudon Plaza in Latham, Bethlehem, Niskayuna and Saratoga Springs (Route 50). This type of fish is raised in dozens of giant tanks in its 40,000-square-foot building that are maintained at the same temperature and salinity as the Mediterranean, without the stress of sharks, dolphins or birds to prey on the fish.
Sea bream is known for its delicate, mild white flesh and is very popular in Italy, France, Israel and other Mediterranean countries, where it is most often grilled or baked whole. “This particular fish receives a NuVal score of 82 and offers Price Chopper customers a healthy and delicious center-of-the-plate protein that can play a key role in a healthy lifestyle,” said Ellie Wilson, Price Chopper’s Senior Corporate Nutritionist.
Also a fan of Local Ocean’s fish is Brad Rosenstein, owner of Jack’s Oyster House in Albany. He has stated, “We believe Local Ocean’s sea bream is the freshest seafood item that is available to us today. We applaud Price Chopper for recognizing that and carrying it in their stores.”
