Different Methods to Dye Easter Eggs

Easter is coming up and that means it’s time to break out the egg dye! However, this year, we are getting more creative with our process. We’re experimenting with different food and natural ways to dye Easter eggs. Check out these 9 unique examples.

Whipped Cream: Lay out a bad of whipped cream and use food coloring to create a design. Roll your hard-boiled eggs over the bed of cream and watch the colors transfer to the eggs. Let the eggs dry then clean off any leftover cream.

Fruits or Veggies: Beets, blueberries, spinach, and more work great for this method. Simmer fruits or veggies in a cup of water with a drizzle of vinegar to create the colors. Soak eggs overnight in dye in the refrigerator for the most rich color. For lighter coloring results, soak for just a few minutes.

Baking Soda: Use baking soda for a fun, unique design on your dyed eggs. Food coloring, baking soda, and vinegar is all you need.

Rice: Start by dying plain rice with food coloring. Once the dye is evenly distributed stick a hard-boiled egg in the rice and shake. It’s best to use a cup or plastic bag. You’ll end up with a cool speckled dyed egg. You can even mix colors of dyed rice for a more fun result.

Instant Pot: With an Intant Pot you don’t even need to hard boil the eggs beforehand, simply cook them in the dye. Use glass pint canning jars inside your Instant Pot to avoid stainning, fill each with dye, egg, and water. Add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar and at least 10 drops of food coloring to each jar. Top off the jars with enough water to cover the eggs. Put a rack on the bottom of your Instant Pot, place your jars on the rack and cook for 6 minutes. Dunk each egg in ice water to cool and let dry.

Ground Tumeric or Cumin: Ground tumeric or cumin are fun natural ingredients to use to dye your eggs. They create a bright yellow, very appropriate for the colors of spring and Easter.

Juice: Depending on the color you’re looking for, grape juice and other fruit juices can be used to dye eggs. Grape juice gives you a lovely dark blue.

Coffee: Brewed coffee is another natural ingredient that’s great for Easter eggs. Shades and colors vary depending on the type of coffee you use.

Get creative with your Easter eggs this year. There are so many fun ways to experiment with the whole family involved. Check out some of these great examples or use a fun idea of your own. Either way visit your local store for many natural dye options or visit us online.

The Many Ways of Maple Syrup

Maple syrup is best known for its role as a sweet finishing touch to pancakes and waffles. However, its abilities go far beyond the breakfast table. Maple farmers use special drills to tap into the trees to obtain the sap that’s boiled down to produce the pure maple syrup we know and love. Here in the Northeast, maple sugaring season occurs as winter ends and spring begins. We’re proud to partner with a variety of local maple farmers and producers in our region to bring you the season’s best. You can add pure maple syrup from our local partners to your culinary tool belt and use them in breakfast recipes, desserts and beyond!

Swap Syrup for Sugar

Give your favorite treats complex, caramelly tastes by using maple syrup in place of sugar in baked goods such as cookies, cakes, breads and muffins. Replace 1 cup of granulated sugar with ¾ cup of maple syrup. For every cup of liquid sweetener, reduce added liquids in the recipe by about 3 to 4 tablespoons. Add about 1 tablespoon of flour for every ¼ cup of maple syrup if there’s no liquid called for in the recipe. When swapping these ingredients, ensure your syrup is at room temperature, as cold syrup can cause other ingredients to clump.

Savory Syrup

Maple syrup adds complexity and subtle sweetness to numerous savory dishes. Use it to flavor proteins like chicken, pork, or salmon, or pair it with bacon for a mouthwatering, sweet and smoky treat. Try whisking it into salad dressings to give your greens hints of caramelization or bring out the natural sweetness of veggies by drizzling maple syrup over tomatoes, squash, potatoes and mushrooms.

Drinks & Desserts

Maple syrup’s versatility extends from the plate to the glass! Add a dash to your morning coffee or tea, or use it to spice up a classic old fashioned or whiskey sour cocktail. It also makes a drool-worthy addition to these Maple Caramel Bacon Brownies, used as a sweetener for whipped cream or drizzled over scones, ice cream, pies and more.

Checking Out Cheddar!

Say cheese! It’s National Cheddar Day and we are shredding with excitement. Cheddar is the most popular type of cheese in America for its reliability and versatility. There’s no limit to what you can do with cheddar. So, in order to give it its proper recognition, let’s learn more about this cheesy favorite.

Cheddar gets its name from the Cheddar Village in Somerset, England where it was first crafted. A smooth texture identifies a young cheddar, while an aged cheddar can be crumbly. According to Anne Saxelby, of Saxelby Cheesemakers, it’s the cheesemaking process that defines cheddar, rather than the cheese itself. She says, people don’t realize that cheddar is actually a verb. During the process itself, the curds are cheddared, creating the cheddar cheese.

Around the 19th century, more countries adopted cheddar and began selling it in their grocery stores. Cheddar’s ability to made anywhere in the world helped it become one of the most popular cheeses. Although the process around the world is similar, and the cheddar is made from cow’s milk, different styles exist due to differing aging processes and rinds.

Saxelby explains in detail how cheddar can be enjoyed throughout the aging process. Young, mild cheese aged 1-3 months is creamy, slightly sweet, and yellow. Semi-sharp cheddar is aged 3-6 months, where the cheese begins to develop a tang. Matured cheddar aged 6-12 months is sharp, drier, crumbly, robust, with a strong flavor. Finally, vintage cheddar, aged 12-24 months, is savory with a salty crunch.

There’s wide variety of cheddar rinds and styles around the world, which makes it very versatile and popular. Check out some our must-try Cheddar recipes. Including, Irish Cheddar Mac & Cheese, White Cheddar & Bacon Kraut Reubens, and plenty more.

Don’t forget to visit your local store or shop our online aisles for your favorite cheddar products!
