New Items: Kodiak Cakes Chewy Crunchy Granola

Afternoon snack cravings are a feeling we all know too well and don’t always know what to do with. You’ve already eaten lunch, but it seems like forever until dinner —so you know you need something to eat in-between. The only problem is, nothing sounds satisfying. Finding smart snacks to satisfy your cravings can be difficult sometimes, but luckily you don’t have to sacrifice great taste for healthier options

Kodiak is here to make it easier, with their NEW Chewy and Crunchy Granola Bars. Made with 100% whole grain ingredients, protein and fiber to help satisfy your hunger and keep you full until dinnertime. Kodiak Chewy bars offer 7 grams of protein per serving, and if crunchy is your preference you can get 10 grams of protein per serving.

Two nutritional components to look for when it comes to smart snacking are protein and whole grains. Protein helps our bodies build and repair muscle tissue and helps you feel fuller, longer. This is partly because protein reduces your body’s level of the hunger hormone, ghrelin, and boosts levels ofpeptide YY, a hormone that makes you feel full.

Whole grains are important because they contain all three parts of a grain: the bran, endosperm, and the germ. Among the many nutritional benefits of eating a whole grain snack is increased amounts of fiber. Fiber is not only important for keeping your digestive system clean but can also help increase that full, satisfying feeling you want from eating a snack. These Kodiak bars offer up a chewy, or crunchy, delicious and balanced option when it comes to snacks for hungry folks of all ages.

National Mac & Cheese Day

There’s nothing like gooey, yummy, melted cheese. Essential for burgers, quesadillas, and of course mac & cheese. Today we are celebrating National Mac & Cheese Day and to do so, we are taking a deeper bite into melted cheese. Let’s break it down.

The science behind how cheese melts

Melted cheese is a science. Cheese is made up of protein and this protein is the key difference between good melting cheese and bad melting cheese. When cheese is heated up, the protein breaks and some hold their shape better than others. For example, younger, high-moisture cheeses like mozzarella, Taleggio, brie, Gruyère, Emmental, and Jack are the most reliable melters. Drier grating cheeses, such as Parmesan and Pecorino-Romano are not.

What are the best cheeses for melting?

The best cheeses for melting are called process cheeses. These products are designed to be easily meltable and difficult to break. Start with real cheese, usually a young cheddar, and blend it with extra milk, extra milk protein, and melting salt to prevent proteins from sticking together. A good example of this is American cheese, where they have so much extra liquid added to them, they have very low melting points, allowing for extra-gooey melted cheese.

At the other end of the spectrum, there are acid-set cheeses. Impossible to melt no matter what type of tweaking you implement. Fresh goat cheese, quick farmers cheese, paneer, queso fresco, and ricotta just can’t melt. When heated, the acid in these cheeses lose water, but not proteins. Water will continue to be cooked off, but the proteins in the curd are only going to tighten, holding the cheese together. These cheeses won’t melt, but you can cook or even grill them!

What are the best cheeses for mac & cheese?

Well, good melters with quality taste, like sharp cheddar. Sharp cheddar is the most common, and it works great, and if you’re using a cheesy blend we recommend cheddar as the base. Now, you get to mix in some fun, flavorful cheeses. Gruyère is common, it melts just as beautifully as cheddar, but brings additional tasty flavors to the table. Gouda, Muenster, fontina, Havarti, and Monterey Jack are also excellent options.

Enjoy National Mac & Cheese Day with a melty, flavorful blend of your own. For whichever cheese you choose to call upon, stop by your local Price Chopper/Market 32 to pick it up or shop with us online!

National Fried Chicken Day!

There are few things as American (or delicious) as fried chicken, and today on National Fried Chicken Day we want to give it its proper recognition. Fried chicken is an all-timer when it comes to comfort food, as good for your soul as it is for your taste buds. Whether you like hot and spicy or original and mild, we’ve got just thing for you!

Did you know that the Scottish played a major role in the birth of fried chicken? It’s surprisingly true! Scottish immigrants in the Southern states had a tradition of deep-frying chicken in fat. These immigrants often worked, lived, and ate with African slaves, who added some spices and touches of their own to the chicken. Eventually, many of slaves became cooks in the south, where fried chicken first became a staple.

The story begins with James Boswell, who wrote about the Scottish locals eating “fricassee of fowl” in his 1773 journal. Boswell described it as “fried chicken or something like that.” In actuality, he was talking about a dish in Scotland called Friars Chicken, not fried chicken, but this is where the recipe first got its name!

Although the very beginnings of fried chicken may remain a mystery, the first recorded recipe dates back to 1747. In a book titled “The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy” by Hannah Glasse she included a recipe called “To Marinate Chickens.” The book found major success in both the UK and the US Colonies.

Since its humble beginnings, fried chicken has become a foodie favorite. Now, different recipes and variations are popular in countries around the world. Every day is a good day for fried chicken, but especially National Fried Chicken Day. Stop by your local store and pick up our Original or Spicy variety for dinner!
